A category we're exploring

Building is getting easier.Getting noticed isn't.

Generative AI is making software dramatically cheaper and faster to create. The supply of human attention has not changed. We're exploring products that make the competition for that scarce resource visible, participatory, and worth watching.

What is an attention market?

A market for what people notice.

An attention market is a system where people, products, or brands compete for a limited amount of human attention.

Advertising has always done this behind the scenes. A newer class of products turns the competition itself into the experience: people choose sides, follow a leaderboard, discover something new, or simply watch the contest unfold.

The term describes a design space, not a single format. Attention can be bought, earned, allocated by a crowd, or won through a game.

The current moment

Outbid made the competition visible.

Outbid.lol is a recent example that made this idea unusually easy to see. It exposed the contest for placement and turned that contest into part of the entertainment.

Its simplicity also made it easy to reproduce. Hundreds of similar products appeared soon afterward, but most captured nothing close to the attention of the original. That difference matters to us: the software can be copied much more easily than the audience.

SoftwareRapidly reproduced
AudienceHard to reproduce

Nexura field notes

Outbid.lol Made the Attention Market Visible

We explored where attention markets came from, why Outbid's clone wave matters, how AI changes the economics of software distribution, and the security problems that can appear when a small project goes viral overnight.

Startup Arena

Upcoming

Nexura's first attention-market experiment.

Startup Arena is an upcoming platform for gamified startup discovery and promotion. Startups compete head-to-head, visitors vote for the product they prefer, and winners receive more visibility.

  1. 01Startups enter
  2. 02Products face off
  3. 03Visitors vote
  4. 04Winners surface

We expect competitions to be organized by category, with promotional opportunities that founders can compete for or purchase access to. The mechanics are still in development. The goal is clear: make startup promotion something people willingly participate in, not another conventional ad slot.

What comes next

There's a lot more to explore here.

Startup Arena is our first experiment. We're interested in what else can happen when attention is treated as a product mechanic, not just a media budget.
